The Secret Service put the White House on lockdown Tuesday morning and evacuated the North Lawn after agents confronted a “suspicious” man holding a package about a block away.

A uniformed officer approached the man near 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue around 10:15 a.m., according to a Secret Service spokesman. The man made “suspicious” comments and was carrying a package, the spokesman said.

Officers then separated the man from the package and placed him into custody in a Secret Service vehicle while explosive teams were called and a partial evacuation was ordered.

Roads around the White House were closed after the alert was issued, and White House tours were suspended. Journalists who were on the north side of the complex were moved indoors.

President Trump was in the White House at the time.

The incident comes just a little more than a week after a male intruder scaled a fence at night and walked around the White House for more than 15 minutes before being apprehended.
