House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday that he does not think House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes should step down from the panel’s investigation into Russia’s alleged interference in the U.S. elections.

Democrats are demanding that Mr. Nunes recuse himself from the committee’s probe, arguing the California Republican’s recent actions have cast a cloud over the effort.

Mr. Nunes told reporters last week that he reviewed sensitive information that appeared to indicate that Mr. Trump’s transition team, and perhaps the president himself, were incidentally swept up in surveillance by intelligence agencies.

Democrats on the committee have grown increasingly frustrated that Mr. Nunes has yet to shed more light on the information he received and from whom he received it. They jumped on news reports this week that Mr. Nunes reviewed the documents on White House grounds before going public with the information.

Mr. Ryan said Tuesday that he does not know the source of Mr. Nunes information.
