Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell shot down the idea of establishing an independent commission to investigate Russian attempts to influence the U.S. election, saying he is confident the Senate Intelligence Committee is up to the task.
“It is not necessary,” Mr. McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill Tuesday.
The Kentucky Republican said that Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr, North Carolina Republican, and ranking member Mark Warner, Virginia Democrat, are “working together well.”
“The Senate Intelligence Committee I trust, and our colleagues trust, to follow every lead [and] to come up with some report,” he said. “I hope it will be on a bipartisan basis, and we will find exactly what happened.”
Mr. McConnell refused to weigh in on the way the investigation is playing out on the House side, where Democrats have called for House Intelligence Committee Chair to recuse himself from the investigation, arguing that his actions have undermined the probe.
