BOYS TOWN, Neb. (AP) - Boys Town has announced Friday that the Rev. Val Peter is leaving the position of associate pastor of Dowd Chapel, the church for the campus west of Omaha.

The Omaha World-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2n4v7el ) that the announcement was made Friday.

The 82-year-old Peter served as Boys Town executive director from 1985 until his retirement in 2005.

Boys Town spokeswoman Kara Neuverth says the decision on Peter’s departure was “based on the pastoral needs of Dowd Chapel.”

Boys Town was founded by Father Edward J. Flanagan in 1917 as an orphanage for boys. It has since grown into a pioneering nonprofit organization for troubled youth with 400 boys and girls living on the Omaha campus and about a dozen facilities around the U.S.
