MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) - The mayor of Muscatine will have to wait until next month to defend herself to the City Council, which is considering her removal from office.

The Muscatine Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2nZF8ub ) that the council met for 11 hours Thursday and listened to witnesses and lawyers talk about Mayor Diana Broderson. Several city employees testified under the guidance of a special counsel and were cross-examined by Broderson’s attorney.

Broderson never got a chance to speak, however, so the council decided to reconvene April 1.

A statement of charges says Broderson’s actions have created unnecessary legal and staff costs and potential liability. Broderson and her supporters say the council is engaged in a political witch hunt.

At least a two-thirds majority of council votes is required in order to remove Broderson from office.
