LOS ANGELES (AP) - A plan has been approved to demolish the well-known former headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department and create a $480 million office tower for city employees.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the plan Friday to raze Parker Center. City engineers have said the building is unsafe.
Officials said the new building brings 1.2 million square feet (111,483 square meters) of office space, as well as retail stores and a civic plaza over the next 15 years.
Preservations have said the city shouldn’t demolish the building. But engineers say it would cost about $107 million more to preserve it and build the tower next door.
Parker Center was regularly featured in the television dramas “Dragnet” and “The Closer.”
The LAPD relocated its headquarters and closed Parker Center in 2013.
