MEDIA, Pa. (AP) - Jurors have convicted a longtime corrections officer of destroying evidence after authorities say he tore a bag of cocaine that he brought into a suburban Philadelphia jail.
The Delaware County Daily Times reports (https://bit.ly/2nYX485 ) Anthony Eggleston was convicted on Thursday. The jury deadlocked on charges of possessing a controlled substance and possessing contraband.
Eggleston is a 19-year veteran at the State Correctional Institution-Chester.
Authorities say he entered the facility in February 2016 and dropped a bag of cocaine onto his boot.
Defense attorney Jason Javie acknowledged that something fell from Eggleston’s pocket, but said it’s impossible to know what the item was or where the bag of cocaine came from.
A status hearing for the remaining charges is scheduled for April 24.
