Isidore Heath Campbell, a notorious Pennsylvania resident known for his fixation with Nazis, can legally change his last name to Hitler, a judge ruled Friday.
The self-proclaimed “Nazi dad” will be legally authorized to use the surname Hitler after May 8, according to a Gannet reported published following a Friday court hearing.
Mr. Campbell first achieved notoriety in 2008 when a supermarket refused to bake him a customized birthday cake for his son, Adolf Hitler Campbell. In 2013 he made headlines again after donning a full Nazi uniform during a custody hearing concerning one of his other children, Heinrich Hons Campbell.
He filed the name change request on Feb. 14 in New Jersey and was given the go-ahead Friday morning during a hearing scheduled before Hunterdon County Superior Court Judge Michael O’Neill in Flemington, according to the Gannet report.
Mr. Campbell listed a Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, address on court documents, but resided previously in New Jersey in addition to being a party to several earlier hearings in Hunterdon County, the report said.
His easily recognizably figure — decorated by swastika tattoos on his neck and arms — was not cited during Friday’s hearing, according to the report.
Amid causing a controversy nearly a decade ago by requesting a cake for his son reading “Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler,” Mr. Campbell told reporters that “a name’s a name.”
“There’s a new president and he says it’s time for a change; well, then it’s time for a change,” he told the New Jersey Star-Ledger in 2008. “They need to accept a name. A name’s a name. The kid isn’t going to grow up and do what [Hitler] did.”
