House Democrats on Friday said GOP lawmakers should be “ashamed” of the health care bill that President Trump and Republican leaders are pushing through Congress, warning that many of the people that voted for the president will be harmed.
“This bill is bad policy, built on a bad process,” said Rep. Joe Crowley, chairman of the House Democratic caucus. “My colleagues on the other side of the aisle should be ashamed, and honestly some of them really are.”
Mr. Crowley questioned whether Republicans are more interested in avoiding a Twitter attack from Mr. Trump and in fulfilling their campaign promise of repealing Obamacare than they are in bolstering health care.
No Democrat is expected to vote for the health care overhaul that is expected to be voted on Friday.
Powerless to stop the bill, they are hoping that Republicans cannot cobble together enough votes to pass the plan.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, said the proposal will lead to millions losing care and paying more to cover insurance premiums and deductibles.
“Trumpcare will take away healthcare from 24 million Americans,” Mrs. Pelosi said. “This is more of a tax break bill for the rich than a health care bill.”
She also took aim at the GOP’s recent decision to do away with essential services that need to be covered under health care plans.
“Ironically many of the people who will lose their health care voted for President Trump,” Mrs. Pelosi said.
