House Democrats called the failure of their Republican colleagues to scrap Obamacare is a “victory for the American people.”
“Today is a great day for our country,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. “What happened on the floor is a victory for the American people.”
Not a single member of the Democratic caucus planned to support the bill.
Mr. Trump fired back during a brief press conference at The White House, blaming the lack of Democratic support for sinking the effort and saying that Democrats will now have to answer to voters for the coming implosion of the Affordable Care Act.
“I think the losers are Nancy Pelosi and [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer because now they own Obamacare — they own it, 100 percent own it,” Mr. Trump said.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, pulled the bill Friday after it was clear that they did not have enough support for their bill, despite pleas from Mr. Trump and his administration.
It marked the second time in as many days that Republicans had to scrap their plan to hold a vote on their health care bill.
“It is pretty exciting for us,” said Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat.
