SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A San Francisco teachers’ union official has been placed on administrative leave in the wake of the release of undercover video that appears to show him admitting to assaulting a student.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/2nRuAgg ) Wednesday that school officials and labor leaders are investigating a video released Tuesday by a nonprofit group known for undercover video stings, Project Veritas.

The edited video shows separate conversations between United Educators of San Francisco Treasurer Antonio Mankini and Project Veritas staffers who were concealing their identities.

In the edited video, Mankini appears to admit he once struck a student and made it look like an accident. Mankini has not been in a classroom teaching position for the past several years, a school district spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Mankini did not respond to a request for comment.

District spokeswoman Gentle Blythe said the comments that appear to be made by Mankini in the video are “very disturbing.”

“We have grave concerns about the behavior Mr. Mankini references, and encourage any former students, staff or family members who may have experienced mistreatment from Mr. Mankini or any other district employee to report their concerns immediately.”

Union officials say Project Veritas is known for breaking laws and lying in pursuit of a political agenda.
