OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - The Opelousas Housing Authority plans to address a desperate need for affordable housing by building up to 45 new homes for low-income families within the next few years.

The pedestrian-friendly development will feature homes with two-car garages.

The Housing Authority acquired property and now it’s put together a nonprofit to offer home ownership to tenants living in public housing.

KLFY-TV (https://bit.ly/2nC43q8 ) reports a mandate will soon kick in causing the flat rent for people with a 120 percent income level to go up to market rate.

Wednesday night, public housing tenants can attend a 6 p.m. meeting about home ownership at the OHA. Officials say experts will discuss the importance of buying a home, how to get a free downpayment and how to get tax credits if buying a home.
