Kevin Shattenkirk had about 12 hours to enjoy his first goal as a Capital before it got taken away.
The NHL reviewed the late second-period goal overnight and decided that Nicklas Backstrom, not Shattenkirk, had scored. Shattenkirk and T.J. Oshie are credited with assisting the goal in the 4-2 Washington win.
Shattenkirk shot the puck from the right side toward Backstrom and Oshie, both of whom were in front of the net. After a few caroms, the puck slid underneath Calgary Flames goalie Brian Elliott.
It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone other than Shattenkirk had gotten a stick on the puck, but Backstrom did joke after the game that he thought he got a piece of it.
Alexander Ovechkin had originally been credited with an assist but was taken out of the play after the league review.
Shattenkirk still has 11 goals on the season and is waiting to score his first official goal in a Capitals uniform.
