OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A memorial service for the father of Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will be Thursday.

Waymon Roberts died last Friday at a hospital in Oceanside at age 68. No cause was given.

The team said Dave Roberts will be away on Wednesday and miss Thursday’s spring training game before returning to camp in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday.

The service will be at New Venture Christian Fellowship in Oceanside.

Born in Rayburn, Texas, Roberts served in the Marine Corps for 30 years before retiring with the rank of master gunnery sergeant. While stationed in Japan, he met his wife and his only son was born on Okinawa in 1972. The family eventually settled in the San Diego area and he worked as a manager for AT&T until retiring in 2015.

Besides his son, Roberts is survived by Eiko, his wife of 45 years; his mother Lola Belle Roberts; three sisters; two brothers; daughter-in-law Tricia Roberts; daughter Melissa Parker; son-in-law Keith Parker; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father James and another sister.

The family suggested contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project and City of Hope hospital and research center in Duarte, California.
