Sen. Ben Sasse said Tuesday that Judge Gorsuch, President Trump’s pick to fill the current vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, should be confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate.
Mr. Sasse said he tries not to kick things off by taking sides, but that Judge Gorsuch’s nomination would ultimately hinge on what Democrats decide to do.
“There’s no reason anybody should be voting against this guy,” Mr. Sasse said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “He should be confirmed a hundred to zero.”
“And you got a whole bunch of people trying to figure out a way to hyperventilate to say, ’he’s probably kicked a puppy somewhere along the way in his life,’” he said. “And there’s no there there.”
“He’s a guy who I think comes to the court every day on the 10th circuit wearing a referee’s jersey - not trying to wear a Broncos versus a Packers jersey - and that’s what you need in a judge,” said Mr. Sasse, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The judiciary committee is spending this week considering Judge Gorsuch’s nomination.
Republicans hold an effective 52-48 majority in the Senate, and Democrats are weighing whether or not to mount a filibuster of the nomination that would require 60 votes to overcome.
