RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Some North Carolina legislators want to make clear documents held by the state’s public colleges about their member athletic organizations - like the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference - are public records.
A bill filed Tuesday by three Senate Republicans seeks to ensure correspondence with conferences and associations held by University of North Carolina system schools are accessible like other government records.
Bill sponsor Sen. Warren Daniel of Morganton says the issue initially surfaced because of the “bathroom bill,” also known as House Bill 2. The ACC and NCAA pulled championships this school year from North Carolina because of the law. Presidents and chancellors of ACC schools made the conference’s decision.
Daniel says the public should have access to records involving decisions by UNC schools that can affect the state.
