OPINION:
Today is the International Day of Happiness. That’s according to the United Nations, which decreed the day back in 2013 and has used all its global might to enforce its provisions on an annual basis since.
So go forth and be happy. Dammit.
“What is the International Day of Happiness? It’s a day to be happy, of course!” as the United Nations puts it. Note the exclamation mark. You know they mean business.
“Since 2013,” UN.org goes on, “the United Nations has celebrated the [day] as a way to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world. In 2015, the U.N. launched 17 sustainable development goals that seek to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect our planet — three key aspects that lead to well-being and happiness.”
And in case those goals can’t be met — you know, the ones that fight hunger, clothe and shelter the poor, educate the youth of the world — well then, the very least people can do is smile and act as if they’re well-fed and clothed.
Hungry? Don’t be rude about it. Slap a smile on that face.
Because, as we all know, smile and the whole world smiles with you. Starve and you starve alone.
Interestingly enough, the United Nations even has a cartoon character to represent the Day of Happiness. This year, it’s the Smurfs.
“The United Nations invites each person of any age, plus every classroom, business and government to celebrate the International Day of Happiness using hashtag #SmallSmurfsBigGoals,” UN.org states.
Really? Really, United Nations — this is what it’s come to?
The right hashtag and all the world’s poverty will go away. The right cartoonish symbol and peace prevails, around the globe. A simple declaration of a Happy Day, and the problems, ills and ailments of the world disappears, like puffs of smoke in the wind.
It’s bad enough the United Nations sucks so much of America’s money and attention, anyway. But forced smiles — mandated happiness? Michelle Obama, former first lady, tried such absurd campaigning on Twitter for the Nigerian girls abducted by Boko Haram Islamic scum — “#BringBackOurGirls.”
Being told by the United Nations to be happy is about as offensive, and equally ridiculous — and if that’s how the world body is going to spend America’s money, that right there is yet one more reason on a list that’s already hitting the triple digits why the United States should get out of the global governing business.
