President Trump returned to Twitter form on Thursday night, tweeting out a defense of his attorney general and blamed the kerfuffle on Democratic partisanship.
“Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional,” Mr. Trump wrote over two tweets about Mr. Sessions not telling the Senate he had twice met the Russian ambassador last year.
Mr. Trump had largely stayed away from Twitter attacks in the past week, posting only seven tweets after some Feb. 26 criticism of the media. Those seven tweets were all fairly anodyne boosterism or announcements of events, posts that wouldn’t have been out-of-character for President Obama.
The gloves came off Thursday night, hours after Mr. Sessions recused himself from any investigations into the 2016 presidential campaign, with Mr. Trump dismissing the whole story as sore-loserism.
“This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed to win. The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election, and now they have lost their grip on reality,” he continued in his tweetstorm.
He also returned to his refrain against the media, calling the Sessions story a distraction from “the real story,” which he said is “all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total ’witch hunt!’”
