SAN MARCOS, Calif. (AP) - A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy has shot and killed a man with a baseball bat who reportedly entered the home of a sleeping family in San Marcos.

Authorities tell the San Diego Union-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2ljb6Ux ) that a homeowner in the gated Silver Crest development was awakened by a noise around 3 a.m. Thursday and found the intruder in the living room.

The homeowner, whose wife and teenage sons were in the home, went upstairs and called 911.

When deputies arrived, the intruder ducked into the garage and tried to steal a family car but crashed into another car parked in the driveway.

Authorities say the man then tried to run away, leading to a confrontation and the shooting.

The man died outside the home. His name hasn’t been released.
