SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Louisiana’s education superintendent has signed a three-year agreement with the Caddo Parish School Board aimed at improving 14 low-performing schools in Shreveport.
The move stops short of a state takeover of the schools.
Superintendent of Education John White announced the establishment of the Caddo Transformation Next Zone, which sets performance goals and improvement plans for the schools.
Caddo Parish’s superintendent will hire and oversee a full-time employee to guide the schools in the zone and chart their progress. A leadership council will offer advice, holding public meetings and making recommendations about changes.
School principals will get more flexibility to hire and fire staff, to choose curricula and to establish school schedules. Teachers deemed to work “effectively” in the schools will be eligible for pay hikes of $15,000 annually.
