PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - A Wal-Mart in the Phoenix area was evacuated over what turned out to be a fake bomb.
Peoria police say a store employee reported the suspicious-looking device found in a stockroom about 10:20 a.m. Saturday.
A bomb squad and robot were called in to check the item, which was made to look like an explosive with wires and flashing lights.
It was removed and the store was combed to ensure safety.
The scene was cleared in about four hours, and the store reopened.
Police say the hoax device didn’t pose a danger but it caused fear and concern and authorities will be checking surveillance video as part of their investigation.
No suspect has been identified.
Wal-Mart issued a statement saying it takes “the safety and security of our customers and associates seriously at all times” and is helping the police with the investigation.
