Future Terrapins at the University of Maryland will be able to turn to an “undocumented student coordinator” if they are in the country illegally.

School officials have acquiesced to a student group called ProtectUMD and created a new position to handle the “immediate needs” of illegal immigrants. A spokesperson said the full-time position falls in line with the school’s “ongoing commitment to undocumented students.”

“We are assigning a UMD staff person to serve as a coordinator to address the immediate needs of the undocumented student population,” said spokeswoman Katie Lawson in a statement, Fox News reported Friday.

Sterling Beard, editor-in-chief of the education watchdog Campus Reform, told the network to expect further concessions in the years ahead.

“This is a mistake by the university,” Mr. Beard said. “Succumbing to those leftist demands from those folks at the university — it will never be enough. Today it’s an undocumented student coordinator, tomorrow they’re going to want legal support, they’re going to want a team of attorneys on standby. It will never be enough for these leftist protesters.”

Bob Dane, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, concurred.

“It’s about politics and this [student group’s] protest isn’t legitimate,” he told Fox. “A university can disagree with the law, but that doesn’t give them the right to aid and abet and harbor illegal immigration, which is really what all of these sanctuary policies and those at the University of Maryland are all about.”
