Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said free trade has led to a number of jobs in both the United States and Canada, while also saying he’s open to “tweaks” in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“Good jobs, middle class, happen on both sides of the border because of the close relationship” between the U.S. and Canada, Mr. Trudeau told NBC News this week.
President Trump frequently criticized NAFTA on the campaign trail and has expressed skepticism about such multilateral trade deals, saying the U.S. is often the one that ends up getting a raw deal.
“NAFTA’s been … improved a dozen times over the past 20 years,” Mr. Trudeau said. “There’s always opportunities to talk about how we can make it better. It has led to a lot of great jobs for a whole lot of people on both sides of the border and I very much take him at his word when he talks about just making a few tweaks. Because that’s what we’re always happy to do.”
