SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake County officials have placed a cap on the number of inmates allowed within the county jail system.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (bit.ly/2nEV6IO) that the county council decided Tuesday to set the maximum operating capacity at 2,050 inmates. When the number of inmates is at 80 percent capacity the council will authorize Sheriff Jim Winder to implement measures to reduce the flow of inmates coming into the jail system.
Winder says the council’s decision comes as the county prepares to deal with a legislative change that will allow some inmates to be moved to less utilized jails in rural counties.
He says sheriffs from around the state will be meeting soon to discuss how inmates will be moved.
