MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) - An investigation audit shows that a deceased former trustee of Black Township in Posey County used township funds to make her cellphone and mortgage payments as well as cover personal expenses for a relative.

The Evansville Courier & Press (https://bit.ly/2moe6KH ) reports that the audit by the State Board of Accounts is seeking reimbursement from Lindsay Suits’ estate of about $31,000 to the township to cover funds she allegedly used. It also seeks about $20,000 to the state to cover the investigation’s cost.

Thirty-eight-year-old Suits was a Black Township trustee from 2011 until she died in August after suffering from cancer.

There was no answer at a phone listing for Lindsay Suits’ family in Mount Vernon on Tuesday morning and a message seeking comment couldn’t be left.

The investigation released Monday says four personal mortgage payments, totaling about $5,300, were made from the Black Township assistance fund from July to December 2014 for a Mount Vernon home owned by Suits and her spouse.

Black Township made payments for Suits’ cellphone services totaling about $3,200 from February 2013 to June 2015.

About $18,100 in township assistance funds were used to make payments for electric and water service, food, medical and dental bills, as well as for rent and later for mortgage, on behalf of an unspecified relative of Suits from June 2011 to October 2015.

Nearly $4,000 in disbursements for prescriptions, food and dental benefits were made from the township assistance fund from June 2013 to November 2014, but those payments couldn’t be traced to any applications on file qualifying someone for assistance.
