BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A judge is expected to determine whether a man charged with tying up and fatally stabbing a Burlington social worker more than six years ago is competent to stand trial.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/2nvqf1w ) a judge will hear testimony on Jose Pazos’ mental competency on Monday and will determine whether the case can move forward.
The 51-year-old Pazos was found incompetent to stand trial by a Burlington judge in 2014. He was later placed in the custody of the state Department of Mental Health for hospitalization and treatment. The case has been on hold since then.
Pazos pleaded not guilty to premediated murder, kidnapping with intent to inflict bodily harm and other charges in the 2010 stabbing death of 50-year-old Kathleen Smith in her home.
