SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A county assessment shows two-thirds of homeless people in a Salt Lake City neighborhood have been to jail or prison.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2n2k5JJ) the study is based on hundreds of interviews with homeless residents of Rio Grande. It was made in November by Salt Lake County and the Collective Impact Steering Committee.
Of those surveyed, more than a third said they had been assaulted and 30 percent said they have behavioral health disorders.
Another 80 percent reported having been arrested and 66 percent said they had been to jail or prison.
The county’s project coordinator, Shaleane Gee, says the survey was conducted to better understand the needs of people seeking homeless services so resources can be allocated more effectively.
