RICHMOND, R.I. (AP) - Residents are speaking out against plans to build a $7.2 million visitor’s center near an Exeter pond.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2n6jOG3 ) nearly everyone who spoke at a public meeting on Thursday evening objected to building the center at the Browning Mill Pond in the Arcadia Management Area.

Residents from Exeter and Richmond say they were unaware of the state Department of Environmental Management’s plans and that the two-story building will obstruct views of the pond.

Agency Director Janet Coit apologized that people didn’t know about the project. She says she will consider the feedback and get back to the town councils.

State officials wouldn’t say whether another site would be considered for the project. The site was chosen at least five years ago without public feedback.
