The Washington Wizards quickly signed veteran point guard Brandon Jennings on Wednesday once he cleared waivers, as expected. To make room for Jennings, Washington cut rookie Danuel House.
The Wizards have been in search of point guard help behind four-time All-Star John Wall. Trey Burke, whom many thought would be cut to make room for Jennings, and rookie Tomas Satoransky have struggled at the position.
Jennings shoots just 38 percent from the field. He is also a small and poor defender. Though, he can create shots for teammates and push the ball. The Wizards’ decision to sign him this late in the season shows their level of desperation for further help at the position.
“Brandon gives us playmaking ability and experience at the guard position while adding another scoring option as well,” general manager Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement. “His presence, along with the recent acquisition of Bojan Bogdanovic and the continued progression of Ian Mahinmi, will help our team as we continue our push towards the playoffs.”
Washington is Jennings’ fifth team in seven-plus seasons in the league. He is an unrestricted free agent after the season.
House was an undrafted rookie signed by the Wizards before the season began. It would not be surprising to see him back with the team in the summer.
The Wizards entered Wednesday tied for third in the Eastern Conference.
