ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A popular Lake Ontario beach in Rochester has been closed indefinitely because the lake’s water level remains well above normal.
Norman Jones, director of environmental services for the city, says the opening of Durand Eastman Beach is being put off as local communities deal with flooding that started weeks ago during heavy early spring rains. The beach was originally set to open next week.
The high water level has left only a narrow strip of sand littered with large logs and other debris.
Part of nearby Ontario Beach Park, run by Monroe County, also is underwater but it’s scheduled to open on June 23.
With temperatures expected to approach 90 over the weekend, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren is encouraging people to use the city’s spray parks and public pools to cool off.
