ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency is extending the public comment period until Sept. 1 on its review of the cleanup of toxic contaminants from the upper Hudson River.

In its review, the agency says that while PCB levels in fish remain high, more dredging doesn’t seem necessary for now. The conclusion, released last week, drew harsh criticism from New York officials and environmental groups.

Boston-based General Electric has removed 2.75 million cubic yards (2.1 million cubic meters) of contaminated sediment from a 40-mile (64-kilometer) stretch of the upper Hudson through 2015. Elected officials and environmentalists claim the cleanup is incomplete.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has encouraged New York residents to “demand that the EPA finish the job” during the comment period on the review.
