LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan city is attempting to break a mark set by the Guinness World Records for the most people simultaneously making sand angels at a beach.
The Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital Foundation is organizing the event, called “Be Someone’s Angel,” which is scheduled for Saturday in Ludington.
Foundation Director Kaley Petersen says the event will also be a fundraiser for the hospital’s cancer service center. The event is free with a $20 suggested donation that will go to center’s patient assistance fund. Title sponsor West Shore Bank has already pledged $25,000 to open the fund.
Participants will create sand angels at the same time for 30 continuous seconds. An official Guinness World Records judge will attend the event to verify in real time if participants break the current record of more than 350 angels completed. That record was set in 2015 in Pembrokeshire, United Kingdom.
The foundation’s goal for the record is 5,000 angels.
“We are expecting the number of participants to be in the thousands,” Petersen said. “I’m hoping to blow (the record) out of the water.”
The event is part of the city’s “Love Ludington” weekend, which also features the opening of the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum.
“We officially launch summer in Ludington with this festive ’Love Ludington’ weekend chock-full of fun, family-friendly activities - and the sand angel contest and new maritime museum are really going to be special,” said Kathy Maclean, executive director of the Ludington Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Visitors and residents alike can experience what makes Ludington unique while celebrating the arrival of summer.”
