If you’re asking who Scooter Gennett is and how in the world did he hit four home runs in a game, you aren’t alone.

Gennett, a backup second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds, turned in arguably the best offensive game in baseball history in a 13-1 Reds win over the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday.

Gennett had five hits, four home runs and 10 RBIs, becoming the first player to ever do such a thing.

According to Cincinnati Enquirer’s C. Trent Rosecrans, Gennett was a late addition to the lineup. He wasn’t scheduled to start until a rainstorm caused the Reds to cancel batting practice and delayed the return of Scott Schebler, who hurt his shoulder Saturday.

Even more unfathomable, Gennett was recently 0-for-19 and was signed by the Reds in spring training after the Milwaukee Brewers waived him.

The Reds, who started as a franchise 135 years ago, never had a player hit four home runs in a game until now.
