JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi county board of supervisors says it wants to be removed from a lawsuit against the state transportation commission alleging discrimination in how federal highway and bridge money is spent.
The Clarion-Ledger reports (https://on.thec-l.com/2rXCxWS ) the Hinds County Board of Supervisors voted Monday on a resolution clarifying that it doesn’t want to be a party although it was listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, filed in late May, says half of federal funds are to be spent in an area with a population of at least 200,000. It argues that although only Hinds County qualifies, a disproportionate amount goes to predominantly white Madison and Rankin counties.
The Board says it never gave authority for the lawsuit’s filing, as a majority of the current members weren’t on when a discussion was had.
