RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Senate is scrutinizing the members of Gov. Roy Cooper’s Cabinet who have yet to be confirmed.
The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday voted to recommend confirmation of state Revenue Department Secretary Ron Penny after about an hour of questioning by senators. The recommendation next goes to another Senate committee.
Eight Cabinet members named in the first weeks of Cooper’s administration already have been confirmed by the full Senate. But the governor waited until April to name Penny as well as Eric Boyette to lead the Department of Information Technology. The Senate Commerce and Insurance Committee was expected to consider Boyette’s confirmation on Wednesday.
Cooper has sued to overturn a new law requiring Cabinet confirmations, but a three-judge panel upheld the law in March.
