PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A parking garage in Portland, Maine, is doing double duty thanks to a rooftop solar array.

Officials say the Fore Street Parking Garage is now home to 578 solar panels that are providing electricity to the Hyatt Place hotel in the city’s Old Port.

The system was activated in late May. Tim Soley is co-founder of East Brown Cow Management, which owns the parking garage. He tells the Portland Press Herald that he’s “jazzed” about the project.

Fortunat Mueller from Portland-based ReVision Energy said solar panels can make use of wasted space in parking garages. In this case, they also provide additional covered parking on the top of level that otherwise would be exposed to the elements.
