DETROIT (AP) - Summer jobs are being provided for 8,127 teens and young adults this year through the Grow Detroit’s Young Talent Program.

Mayor Mike Duggan announced Friday that the program exceeded its hiring goal of 8,000. Most will start work on July 10. The jobs pay between $7.50 and $9.50 per hour and last for six weeks.

More than 12,000 youth applied for positions this year.

Duggan challenged businesses and foundations to take part in the program. About $10 million was raised to help pay for the program.

About 8,100 jobs were created last summer and 5,600 in 2015.
