After a six-month gig on MSNBC, veteran political host Greta Van Susteren announced her departure from the cable news network with a single, five-word tweet.
“I am out at MSNBC,” Ms. Susteren wrote in mid-afternoon Thursday.
Only minutes later, MSNBC president Phil Griffin confirmed her departure, announcing that Ari Melber, the network’s legal correspondent, would take over the helm of “On the Record,” which aired daily at 6 p.m.
“Greta is a well-regarded television veteran and one of only a few broadcasters who can say they’ve hosted shows at all three major cable news networks. We are grateful to her and wish her the best,” Mr. Griffin noted in an advisory.
Ms. Van Susteren spent 14 years at Fox News hosting a successful prime-time show until her resignation in September.
“MSNBC got rid of me — that’s all,” she added in a later tweet.
News coverage of her sudden departure from MSNBC was swift in the aftermath.
“Greta gone!” wrote the New York Daily News.
Business Insider described her exit as abrupt while Vanity Fair suggested it had been a mutual parting of ways between Ms. Susteren and MSNBC.
“In an era when liberal anger is driving ratings, the former Fox anchor’s show never caught fire,” the publication noted.
As for the host, she continued to tweet about her new status, offering a stream of commentary.
“All I ever wanted at any network is an opportunity to do my best: focus on facts and challenge authority,” Ms. Susteren wrote, along with “Tonight I am trying to figure out what I am doing tomorrow…unexpected day off.”
Also among her comments: “I don’t know what I might do or not do in the media…big world out there w/lots of adventures.”
