BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A former police officer convicted of murder will remain in prison in Alabama after the state parole board refused an early release.

The Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole refused parole during a hearing for 47-year-old Jeff Kelly McCord.

Al.com reports McCord pleaded guilty in 2003 to killing Alan and Terra Bates in the Birmingham suburb of Hoover.

McCord’s wife at the time, Jessica Bates McCord, was also convicted in the ambush shootings deaths of the couple, who were her ex-husband and his new wife. The Bates were killed during a dispute over child visitation.

Wednesday was the first parole hearing for Jeff McCord, who was a Pelham police officer at the time of the gunshot killings. McCord won’t be eligible for another hearing until 2022.
