The Washington Nationals had seven stolen bases against the Chicago Cubs in a 6-1 win Tuesday, including four stolen bases by Trea Turner in the first three innings.
Those early steals came off Cubs ace Jake Arrieta, who has thrown two no-hitters and won a Cy Young Award. The blame naturally shifted to Cubs backup catcher Miguel Montero, who is 33 and doesn’t play every day.
Montero, though, wasn’t taking any of it.

Turner, the Nationals shortstop, also unknowingly came to Montero’s defense.
“I don’t pay attention to the catcher too much,” he said. “More so, pitcher. I knew that Arrieta was slower to the plate, so I just wanted to be aggressive and make sure I was taking good chances.”
The Nationals and the Cubs play again Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. start time at Nationals Park.
