The Chicago Cubs have reportedly designated Miguel Montero for assignment, one day after the catcher blamed the Cubs’ pitching staff for his struggles throwing out Washington Nationals base runners.

Montero, a two-time All-Star, made the controversial comments after Tuesday night’s 6-1 loss to the Nationals, in which Washington stole seven bases, breaking a franchise record. Through Tuesday, the Cubs have thrown out only one of 32 would-be base stealers this season.
After the game, Montero pointedly called out Chicago’s pitchers, seeming to specifically to target Tuesday’s starter Jake Arrieta without naming him, claiming that “my pitchers don’t hold anybody on.”

The Cubs’ front office clearly took Montero’s complaints as a request to leave, designating the 11-year veteran for assignment and calling up catcher/first baseman Victor Caratini from AAA to fill the roster spot.
