OPINION:
Joy Behar’s biggest claim to fame is as a comedian — we get that.
But poking fun of the president’s and first lady’s sex life? Come on. That’s just tasteless, tactless, juvenile, grasping at relevancy, gasping for attention and — and, well, stupid.
On “The Late Night” with Seth Meyers, Behar treaded into high-school terrain by jesting, at Melania Trump’s expense, that she “feel[s] sorry for her” because “she had to sleep with him once. At least once, she did.”
The “him,” of course, is President Donald Trump. And the reference to “at least once” was about the conception and birth of the Trumps’ son, Barron.
The whole episode could’ve been glossed over and relegated to the category of quip had Behar moved on, picked a different topic — or at least angle. But she was just getting warmed up.
She spoke of Melania’s stay in New York, while her husband moved into the White House. The temporary separation, as it was widely reported, was due to Melania’s insistence Barron finish the year at his existing school.
But to Behar, it was all about sex.
“And then when she was in New York and we had to pay a million dollars a day to keep her here just because she doesn’t want to sleep with him, we had to pay for that,” she said, Mediaite reported. “I didn’t like that.”
And Meyers responded: “Because I don’t want to sleep with him, but nobody gives me extra money.”
What is it about the left and comedy that’s just so unfunny?
Kathy Griffin, another comedy claim-to-famer, was just scorned across conservative camps for a widely viewed image of herself holding a bloodied faux Trump head — all in the name of a joke.
Johnny Depp, Hollywood actor, just joked about assassinating Trump.
In January, pop icon Madonna joked about “blowing up the White House.”
In February 2016, when talk of a Trump presidency was just making media waves, comedian George Lopez tweeted a gruesome image of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, of Mexico drug kingpin fame, holding the severed head of Trump. Along was the image was this text, mocking Trump’s own campaign mantra: “Make America great again!”
Funny?
To the left, apparently.
Beheadings and sex jokes — the Democrats’ go-to points when their political messages aren’t resonating. Just one note: It probably wouldn’t be as humorous to the left if, say, the butts of the jokes were Barack and Michelle Obama. Then, it would be racist and discriminatory, uncalled-for and ridiculous. But when the Trumps are the targets? Anything goes, the bloodier, the seamier the better.
