Fortune magazine is out with a new list of the “100 Best Workplaces for Millennials” and two D.C.-area-based companies placed in the top 20.

Navy Federal, a Vienna-headquartered credit union catering to members of the U.S. armed forces, placed 7th overall while Bethesda-based hotelier Marriott International ranked 14th.

Fortune explained that the common thread among companies on the list was engaging millennial employees to feel on board with the mission of the organization, rather than seeing the job merely as a paycheck.

“Employers we studied focused on helping align the employee’s personal values and the organization’s work,” wrote the survey’s authors. “This approach turns work into an opportunity for employees to meaningfully express who they are as individuals — or even an opportunity for their organizations to help them become the person they want to be.”

“There is flexibility and a focus on the balance of work and home life that you do not typically find in large corporations,” an unnamed Marriott employer said of the hotelier, where millennials account for 34 percent of its workforce, according to Fortune.

An unnamed employee for Navy Federal praised how “upper-level management respects my thoughts and observations, and my recommendations are considered and taken into account.”

Navy Federal, considerably smaller in size than Marriott, counts millennials as 46 percent of its employee base.

Including Navy Federal, Virginia boasts five companies in Fortune’s top 100 listing: Capital One bank and Mars manufacturing, both based in McLean; Richmond-based auto retailer CarMax; and Charlottesville mobile-app designer company WillowTree.

Hanover-based IT services company TEKSystems, and Bethesda-based financial firm Walker & Dunlop round out Maryland’s trio.

No companies headquartered in the District made Fortune’s 2017 list.
