WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The city of Wilmington, Delaware, will discuss the idea of a gun offender registry.

The News Journal reported Wednesday that the city council’s public safety committee will consider a proposal at a July 10 meeting.

Such a measure would require city residents with gun convictions to periodically check in with police. The committee could approve the legislation, sending it to council for a full vote.

The Gun Offender Registration Act would require any resident convicted of a gun-related offense to register with police within two days of release from incarceration. Then he or she would be required to check in with police every six months.

The penalty for missing a check in would carry a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
