WASHINGTON (AP) - More than a million residents of the greater Washington metropolitan area are expected to leave the area for July Fourth.

AAA Mid-Atlantic made the projection in a statement Wednesday, saying the number is a record. The group says it began tracking the number of holiday travelers in 2001 and that holiday travel volume in the Washington metro area has increased by nearly a third since then.

AAA says 1,109,000 residents of the area are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming holiday weekend and that nearly nine out of 10 will do so in a road trip.

AAA says that nationally, 44 million people are expected to travel for the July Fourth holiday.
