BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man has been convicted of killing his former girlfriend’s toddler son.

The Bradenton Herald reports that 37-year-old Richard Williams was found guilty Tuesday of second-degree murder. He faces up to life in prison at his Sept. 6 sentencing.

Authorities say Williams was home alone with his own daughter and his then-girlfriend’s 17-month-old son, William Pollard, in July 2015. The boy began struggling to breathe and went limp.

An autopsy later determined the child’s death was caused by blunt-force trauma to his head, which caused his brain to swell. Williams denied ever hurting the toddler but said the boy had slipped in the bathtub and fell several other times.
