VIENNA (AP) - Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer needs surgery on his injured right knee for a third time, ruling him out of the World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Georgia in September.
Almer’s club, Austria Vienna, says the ’keeper will have the operation in a clinic in Germany on Wednesday, forcing him to postpone his comeback indefinitely.
Almer, who had two knee operations after a Europa League game against AS Roma in October last year, says “obviously it is a setback for me but I have to take it as it comes.”
The 33-year-old Almer played 32 times for Austria and set a national record two years ago when he didn’t concede a goal for 603 minutes in qualifying for Euro 2016.
