BUCHANAN, N.Y. (AP) - One of two nuclear power plants at Indian Point in Westchester County has been shut down due to a faulty water pump.

The Entergy Corporation says the Unit 2 power plant in Buchanan (byoo-KAN’-uhn) was shut Monday afternoon following an issue with the speed control system on one of the unit’s two main feedwater pumps.

Entergy says feedwater pumps are located on the non-nuclear side of the plant. They distribute water to the plant’s four steam generators to be reheated in order to make the steam required to generate electricity.

The company says there was no release of radioactivity and no threat to workers or the public’s safety.

Earlier this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Entergy reached a deal to shut down Indian Point entirely by April 2021.
