AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - State workers in Maine are bracing for a potential government shutdown.

The Kennebec Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2rZciKY ) Maine’s Legislature voted for an extension to determine a state spending plan for the next two years Wednesday. Gov. Paul LePage explained the government was preparing for a possible shutdown the day before the vote.

Maine won’t have money to pay state workers if it doesn’t get an approved budget by June 30.

Maine Correctional Center staffer Will Towers worries about essential employees in prisons and mental health facilities who might have to work without pay.

Colby College professor David Findlay says a potential shutdown could have huge effects on the state.

Maine employees about 12,000 people. The state last saw a government shutdown in 1991.
