ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta City Council has approved raising the city’s minimum wage to $13 per hour beginning July 1.

The new wage, a bump from $10.10 per hour, will impact 360 city employees. It is part of the city’s $648.6 million budget approved Wednesday.

The council also committed to increasing hourly wages to $14 beginning July 1, 2018 and $15 starting July 1, 2019. In addition, it raised firefighters’ base salaries based on years of service.

City Council President Ceasar Mitchell said in a statement the pay hikes send a strong message that city employees’ hard work is appreciated.

Atlanta Jobs with Justice Coalition Coordinator Neil Sardana says the council’s actions will help move many city workers out of poverty, allowing them to now provide for basic needs.
